2012 Porsche Boxster Latest Winter Spy Photos

New spy photos of the 2012 Porsche Boxster were captured in snowy northern Europe. The pictures show a new body for the Porsche model, with just a hint of the car's LED daytime lights.

The photographer on the scene says the Boxster prototype is definitely "lower and wider than the current generation." The front bumper appears to extend closer to the ground, and tape could be covering up changes in the side panels and sills. Thus far, the car has mainly been spied with a cloth roof. Perforated brake disks, already available on the current model, can be seen in these photos.

Previous reports mention Porsches need to reduce CO2 emissions down to about 180 g/km. As a result, Porsche is considering a turbocharged three-cylinder engine for the third generation Boxster model.

Nonetheless, the real changes could be coming to the car's performance figures. Look for more efficient numbers to come from the next-gen Boxster, which will likely weigh less than the current model, as well as a 2011 launch.

Audi RS5 Leaked

Ever since the Audi A5 mid-size executive coupe was born 3 years ago, reports of a high-performance RS variant have been teasing us. Finally, the wait is over.

Goog thing we checked our inbox today because we received an anonymous email containing 18 full-resolution photos of the Audi RS 5. Simultaneously, we also received a tip from Australian Motoring blog Ausmotive.com which just posted the same photos which are sourced from a leaked brochure. Either way, go put your bib on, because the drooling starts now.

No details about the powertrain or performance specs are revealed in the brochure. However, it does mention three types of seating and four wheel design choices. Audi's 7-speed dual clutch S-tronic transmission is the only choice - no mention of 6-speed manual. Also, no flat-bottom steering wheel is shown.

Speculation over which powerplant will drive the RS 5 has ranged from a massaged 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in the S4, 4.2-liter V8 and 5.0-liter V10 in the RS 6 to the range topping 5.2-liter V10 from the R8. Horsepower has been logically guestimated between 450 PS (331 kW / 444 hp) and 550 PS (405 kW / 542 hp), essentially where the RS 4 leaves off with 420 PS (309 kW / 414 hp) and ending with the RS 6 and its 579 PS (426 kW / 571 hp).

The RS 5 will undoubtedly debut at the Geneva Motor Show in two weeks. According to previous reports, the RS5 hits the streets soon after in July.

Panamera Commercial with Classic Porsches: Behind the Scenes [Video]

It may be a bit of "old news," but we were so impressed by this video that we had to showcase it. This "Making of" video takes viewers behind the scenes of a recent Porsche Panamera commercial shoot.

The "Family Tree" ad used 50 different Porsche models, with 22 professional drivers on hand to make it happen. In the final version, the cars race around miles of tarmac, all centered around the new Porsche Panamera. By the end of the video, the cars have splintered off to form the shape of a tree, with the Panamera creating "another bold line on the family tree," states the narrator.

The shoot for the television ad took three days to complete, with over 160 crew members involved. "Family Tree" was directed by @Radical Media's Jeff Zwart, who specializes in automotive ads. Amongst many other spots, Zwart directed the Hyundai Genesis Coupe commercial featuring Yo-Yo Ma.

The four-seat four-door Porsche Panamera is offered in three trim levels with either a 394-horsepower 4.8-liter naturally-aspirated V8, or a twin turbo model producing 493 hp. Six-speed manual and ZF seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearboxes are available. A hybrid version is also speculated.

Mercedes SLS AMG Tunnel Video Staring Michael Schumacher [Video]

The first in a series of Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ads featuring Michael Schumacher was released today. It shows Schuey driving the car through a tunnel at high speed, steering it off the road, up one wall, across the ceiling, down the other wall, before safely and smoothly getting the car back on the road.

Rough edits of the video had surfaced over the past few weeks. This is the first to identify Schumacher as the driver of the gullwing model. Rather, it is the first to try to convince us that he is the driver.

Fake or not, the minute-long video is fun to watch. It is part of a coordinated, cross-media marketing campaign by Mercedes to promote their speedy car, and their brand as a whole.

Production of the hand-built Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG began this month, about two months before its scheduled European market launch. The car uses a 6.3-liter (6208cc) V8 engine producing 563 horsepower and up to 479 ft-lb of torque.

VW Group Considering Audi R4 Platform for New Entry Level Porsche - speculation

The R8 started an exciting journey for the Audi brand when it launched into a segment its maker had not competed in before. Soon after rumours of a smaller R8, thought to be called the R4, surfaced. A concept e-tron car unveiled at the recent Detroit Auto Show confirmed that indeed an R4 is in the works.

Now Porsche is considering using the R4 platform as a basis for its newest and smallest model line. Speaking to Autocar, VW Group chairman Martin Winterkorn finally admitted to be looking at a car below the Boxster/ Cayman pair.

"The Porsche model range is firmly based on the 911, Boxster, Cayenne and Cayman, and it will stay that way," he was quoted as saying. "We are also investigating opportunities for a smaller sports car and a smaller SUV - but I cannot say more at the moment."

The car dubbed the new 356 would use a mid-engine layout and source power (said to be about 186kW or 250bhp) from a turbocharged boxer engine. It will share its transmission with the R4 but remain very much a Porsche in most other ways.

Although the R4 is expected to go on sale around June 2011, the Porsche model won't be available until at least 2012. Speculated prices stand at the equivalent of £33,000 (US$53,300) in today's money.

Porsche 991 Latest Winter Test Spy Photos - Rear LEDs in View

Spyes have snapped new pictures of the redesigned Porsche 911 (codenamed 991 or 998) undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden.

While it's still heavily camouflaged, we can see new details about the 911's LED taillights. Overall, the shape is similar to the one used on the current model (997.5), but the turn signal elements appear wider.

As we have previously reported, the next-generation 911 will feature an evolutionary design theme with minor styling tweaks. Changes include streamlined headlights, Panamera-style door mirrors, a revised rear windshield wiper, and wider rear wheel haunches. The 2011 model may also be a tad longer than the 997.

Engine options will likely carryover with minor modifications, and they will be connected to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission. Like the current 911, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants will be available.

Audi A1 Snapped During Commercial Filming with Justin Timberlake

A candid snapshot of the Audi A1, with pop-chart topper Justin Timberlake in the foreground, recently leaked out from a video and photo shoot. As the recently announced Audi A1 ambassador, Timberlake will be featured in a series of advertisements for the new supermini.

Following official teaser renderings released a few days ago, the car appears to have headlights that bulge a bit as they extend outwards. The grille has a slight hexagonal shape, instead of a trapezoidal one. Air intakes appear to be larger, with foglights ringed in either chrome or white. It appears as though the A-pillar and roofline are still in a second color tone, as expected.

Do not read too much into the American pop star's involvement in the A1 campaign; this is not a sign that the car is coming to US soil. Despite the Mini Cooper's level of profitability in North America, Audi executives have long maintained that the volume of sales are not enough to justify bringing in another competitor. Audi boldly reiterated this line of thinking recently with a statement saying, "no sales are planned for the U.S."

Audi plans to introduce the urban commuter on the internet next February, with a full-reveal coming in March at the Geneva Motor Show.

All New 2011 Audi A8 Revealed - 87 Photos, Initial Details and Video

With much anticipation, Audi has unveiled the all-new fourth generation A8 full-size luxury sedan this evening in Miami. At a glance the A8 and its aluminum body structure features an updated MMI operating system with hand writing recognition touch pad, new driver assistance systems, full LED headlights and new technologies such as night vision assist with marking of detected pedestrians and Audi pre sense safety system.

The A8's core competitors include the Mercedes-Benz S Class and BMW 7 Series with the Lexus LS and Jaguar XJ described as secondary competitors. The 2011 A8 weighs about the same as the outgoing model despite being 3 inches longer, 2 inches wider and has more standard equipment (8-speed auto transmission, pre sense basic, keyless go, power trunk, etc.) versus competitors: ~50lbs less than S Class RWD, and more than 200lbs (90.7kg) less than S Class AWD; more than 200lbs less than 7 Series RWD and more than 400lbs (181.4kg) less than 7 Series AWD.

“The new Audi A8 is the sportiest sedan in its segment,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “It combines numerous functions in a new and intelligent way. And it’s unmatched in the stylistic elements and impression of the interior.”

Set to arrive at U.S. dealerships in late 2010, the initial engine offering is the well known 4.2 FSI V8 with 273 kW (372 hp). The standard transmission is an all-new eight speed tiptronic coupled to the latest generation quattro all wheel drive as standard. 0-100km/h (62 mph) arrives in 5.7 seconds while Audi is claiming an estimated 15 percent improvement in fuel consumption versus the current A8 (EPA figures TBD).

A long wheel base variant will be revealed in 2010 in addition to the confirmation of a hybrid model on the way.

Mystery BMW M1 Mule Spotted

This BMW mule was caught on video while parked on a street in Munich. Covered in the usual black and white psychedelic camouflage, the body is curiously that of the old 1978 M1. The interior is also covered up.

In 2008 BMW revealed an M1 Homage car, a move that sparked speculation of a future BMW supercar or at least a revival of the M1 name. Its design was a clear hark to the original M1 inspired by the 1972 BMW Turbo show car and designed by Giugiaro. It was essentially a racer that customers could also be able to drive on public roads.

Lamborghini had initially been tasked with developing the chassis and for manufacturing but its financial position at the time hampered the project such that BMW ended up retaking control. Ultimately only 456 units of the M1 were ever produced, making it one of the rarest BMWs ever built. The car did not completely disappear when the last one rolled off the production line in 1981 because the first-generation M5 featured a modified version of its 3.5-litre engine.

Perhaps the mule is another Homage model or just simply a public showcase of the older car.

2011 Mercedes C-Class Facelift Latest Spy Photos

Time for another round of facelift Mercedes-Benz C-Class spy pictures. In this instance we can see the top edge of the headlamps covered with some sticky tape. It looks like the C will sport an LED strip for the first time.

Other styling changes expected include a new front bumper, a new bonnet and a modified rear end. The interior should receive some minor upgrades as well. The engine range will remain largely the same and include such powerplants as the 125kW (170hp) four-cylinder turbo diesel and the 3.5-litre petrol V6. European sales are scheduled to commence some time in 2010.

2011 BMW 5-Series F10 Sedan Revealed

The all-new sixth generation BMW 5-Series codenamed F10 has finally been revealed today.

In contrast to the current E60 generation which was characterized as being overly dramatic and baroque, the new F10 returns to a more graceful and conservative design reminiscent of the fourth generation E39, yet still aggressive and sporty. We are sure the F10 will win back a lot of alienated BMW fans from the previous Chris Bangle design era.

The new 5 Series sedan will launch with one eight-cylinder and three six-cylinder petrol engines as well as two six-cylinder diesels. Approximately three months later, the range will be rounded off by a direct injection four-cylinder turbodiesel.

Starting with the petrol units at the top of the range, the 550i TwinPower Turbo V8 makes 300 kW/407 hp, 535i twin turbo straight-six delivers 225 kW/306 hp, while the two straight-six engines with direct injection develop 190 kW/258 hp in the BMW 528i and, 150 kW/204 hp in the BMW 523i, respectively. For the diesels, the 530d produces 180 kW/245 hp and the 525d with 150 kW/204 hp. Lastly, the 520d and its four-cylinder makes 135 kW/184hp boasting an average fuel consumption figure in the EU5 test cycle at 5.2 litres/100 kilometres, the CO2 emission rating is 137 g/km (provisional figures with automatic transmission). BMW's new eight-speed automatic transmission is available as standard on all models (in Germany).

For the front suspension BMW is doing away with the MacPherson strut system that has been in use since 1965 and adopts a more sophisticated multi-link system already seen on the 7-Series F01. The rear suspension has been upgraded as well but remains the same in principle, also as a multi-link system. When equipped with a Sport Package, Adaptive Drive is added which includes Driving Dynamics Control, Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization. Optional Integral Active Steering will virtually extend or shorten the vehicle's wheelbase for improved stability at high speeds and enhanced agility at lower speeds.

BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are featuring as standard Brake Energy Regeneration, a gearshift point indicator, active air flap control, and on-demand operation of ancillary units including a detachable a/c compressor. Body construction features aluminum components such as the doors, hood, front fenders and suspension to reduce weight.

A tour de force of driver's aid and infotainment features are available on the 5-Series. They include a Parking Assistant, Surround View, collision warning with application of the brakes in conjunction with Active Cruise Control plus Stop & Go, and a new Speed Limit Device. Further features also available are Lane Change Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, a Head-Up Display, a High-Beam Assistant, BMW Night Vision with detection of individual persons, Park Distance Control and a back-up camera.

The latest fourth generation of BMW iDrive control appears in two versions: with 7.0-in. dimensions and 800 x 480-pixel resolution in standard form, or with the optional Navigation system, in a 10.2-in., 1280 x 480-pixel version with a wider range of features and functions as in the new BMW 7 Series. Displays are transreflective so that light from the sun actually makes the images on the screen brighter.

The 5-Series will be built at BMW Plant Dingolfing along side the new 2009 BMW 7 Series F01. The 5-Series F10 is based on the same architecture as the 7-Series as both vehicles extensively share components.

Dealer and press junket is scheduled for February 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal while European market launch takes place in March 2010.

Spy Video: The all new 2011 BMW 5 Series

With days before its official unveiling in Munich on November 23rd, a new and most likely last spy video of the new 2011 BMW 5 Series has showed up on our radar. The fellows journalists at Auto Motor und Sport spotted the new 5 Series during several testing sessions on the roads of Munich.

The video shows different 5 Series variants and exterior colors: 550i, 535i and Sophisto Gray, Amethyst or Alpine White. What strikes us the most about this video compilation is the professional method in which it was shoot, a sign that the launch is imminent and the car is out in the open.

As we mentioned, the new 2011 BMW 5 Series will launch next Monday and our German publication, BimmerToday.de, will be there to report live. As always, stay tuned for a complete coverage of this new model.

Audi A7 Sportback: Spy shots from Los Angeles

How about this -- it might be the long-rumored A7. You know, the swoopy "four-door coupe" set to compete against cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLS. That makes much more sense. Take a long look at the rear glass and thick C-pillars in this spy shot. We thinks we may be on to something. Especially if you stare long and hard at the tail lights -- the outer ones appear real and taped off, while the inner lights appear to be fake pieces of reflective tape. A design that conforms to the blurry A7 shots we've seen.

Top Gear: BMW 760Li vs. Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

Top Gear returns with a new episode and for us, the BMW fans, it gets quite exciting. Top Gear decides to compare the all new BMW flagship, 760Li, against Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. The BMW 760i and 760Li are powered by a completely new 6.0-liter V12 all-aluminum engine with Twin-Turbo Technology.

The V12 engine outputs 544 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 533 lb-ft at 1,500.The engine is matted to an 8-speed automatic transmission and the 760 runs from 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

Now, let’s take a look at the Mercedes Benz S63 AMG. The S63 uses a 6.3-liter V8 engine which outputs a hefty 456 lb-ft. of torque on tap and 518-horsepower. The engine is matted to AMG-modified seven-speed automatic.

First video of the 2012 BMW 3 Series F30

The first spy photos of the next generation BMW 3 Series broke out just a couple of weeks ago. With three years left before the unveiling, several test mules began the lengthy testing process.

The prototypes seen on the road now carry a large amount of plastic camouflage on them that cover the actual design lines. What the photos reveal currently are similar proportions to the current model and a slightly longer wheelbase.

Sources close to BMW mention that the proportions of a typical 3 Series will remain, meaning squat proportions, short rear overhang and wheels placed to each corner.

2011 BMW 5-Series Partial Nose Photo Allegedly Leaked

The first official teaser for the 2011 BMW 5-Series F10 released earlier this week was met with little enthusiasm. Fans criticised that the teaser, which showed the silhouette of the F10 body using BMW's kinetic sculpture, didn't reveal enough "skin" to keep fans intrigued or generate further excitement. This reaction is quite understandable as WCF readers have been staring at the F10 body shape for months thanks to our intrepid spy photographers.

However, an anonymous BMW dealer supposedly decided to take matters into his/her own hands, and forwarded to WCF exclusively via a liason this low resolution image of the F10 front corner completely uncovered.

Since the source cannot be verified, we have to emphasize that the alleged F10 image could be a clever digital manipulation. Compared to spy photos included on this page, there are some differences in the image which don't match, particularly at the rear corner of the headlamp where it meets the fender and bumper fascia. Also, the headlamp washer pump opening is missing from the bumper fascia as well.

Despite the minor discrepancies, the image looks good enough to serve its purpose, which is to intrigue, pique curiosity and perhaps generate excitement for BMW's highly anticipated premium sedan.

2011 BMW 5-Series F10 Teaser Trailer Released

BMW has finally announced the media release of the all new 2011 BMW 5 Series (F10) to take place via Live-Stream on November 23rd, 8p.m. CET. Along with the annoucement comes the teaser image and video using BMW's kinetic sculpture from the BMW Museum to illustrate the vehicle's silhouette.

With the timing of the unveiling so close to the Los Angeles Auto Show (Dec 2), it's likely the 5-Series will have it's public debut at the last major show of 2009. The F10 5-Series is one of the most anticipated vehicles of the year.

Mercedes E-Class Cabrio Shows its Rear

Our spies have caught a Mercedes E-Class Cabrio virtually undisguised.

While only a few pieces of camouflage hide the headlights and emblems, we've already seen these design elements on the E-Class Coupe. Nearly identical to the aforementioned model, the Cabrio features a canvas roof and a unique pop-up wind blocker (the black section at top of the windshield) that reduces air turbulence when the roof is down.

Like the coupe, engine options are expected to include a 215 kW (292 hp) 3.5-liter V6 and a 5.5-liter V8 with 285 kW (388 hp). Since Mercedes has nixed the AMG version of the E-Class Coupe, the Cabrio won't receive the fire breathing 6.3-liter (6208cc) V8 engine with 386 kW (525 hp) and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque.

Look for the E-Class Cabrio to debut at the North American International Auto Show or the Geneva Motor Show.

2010 BMW Z4 M Package Returns for Another Outing

Another BMW Z4 with an M Package was spotted by our spies. Previous shots revealed a red model which is now switched with this grey one. It seems most of the kit is concentrated on the front and rear bumpers where the black and white camouflage is pasted. Since BMW is not producing a high-performance Z4 M for the current model the kit is just about as close as fans will get to that halo car. Unfortunately even accompanying engine upgrades are not expected, although the new 326hp, 450Nm M Sport power pack for the 135i and 335i cannot be discounted.

Instead the suspension will be tweaked slightly, larger wheels fitted and M badges posted in key areas, inside and out. The package should be offered across the Z4 range.

2011 Audi A8 Spied: New details Surface

More spy pictures of the 2011 Audi A8 have appeared as it went around the Nürburgring. Audi is giving it a workout that should make it stand out against competitors in terms of handling. The black and white camouflage is still quite heavy so not much can be seen.

The big news is kept under the bonnet where a new range of powerplants will be found. Downsizing is quite a popular practice across the motor industry and Audi has been at the edge of it all. Therefore, a new compact 2.0-litre TDI is rumoured to be the entry-level diesel for the next A8. Speculation is that it will use twin-turbo technology to churn out over 147kW (200hp) and 400Nm of torque.

There will be other options of course such as V6s and V8s, both petrol and diesel. The V10 currently in the S8 is to be deleted in favour of a smaller V8 packing over 300kW (408hp). Another new engine for the A8 will be based on the same supercharged 3.0-liter V6 found in the 245kW (333hp) S4/ S5. However, it will have twin-turbos producing even more power. At the very top end we should see a new powerful 6.5-litre V12 doing well over 368kW (500hp).

While over 90% of the A8s sold will feature quattro AWD, the rest will be driven through the front wheels. The range-topping Audi will also come with an upgraded MMI system, night vision technology and road sign-recognition abilities.

The new A8 will debut at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and go on sale sometime during the year. In the US it will be sold as a 2011 model.

Spy Photos: 2011 BMW 5 Series shows more “skin”

It was just a matter of time until the 2011 BMW 5 Series will begin to reveal itself even more. Latest spy photos published by MotorAuthority are giving away some design details unseen before.

For the first time, the front fascia is almost fully unveiled, with the kidney grille and headlights showing us the final details. As we expected, the corona rings headlights are very close to the ones seen in the 5 Series GT model. The larger than usual kidney grille seen in the new 7 and 5GT has been toned down, but at the same time, it is wider than the current E60 model.

At the rear end, the bumper has been revealed, but the headlights still keep some mystery around them. The test mule seems to feature production ready wheels giving the car the aggressive look we’ve all been waiting for.

Some visible features include the two massive tailpipes, a rear diffuser, rear LED lights and low profile tyres. A brief sneak peak through the windows reveals two front sports seats similar to those of the RS 6.

Since Audi postponed a number of their new product launches, thanks to the global recession, the RS 5 has had to bide its time and clock up extra test miles. Hopefully that makes it an even sharper road hog than originally planned.

Under the bonnet lurks a rumoured 330kW (449hp) of power from a 4.2-litre V8 engine. It would be placed under the care of quattro AWD and a standard 6-speed manual or a 7-speed R Tronic. As with recent versions of quattro most torque should head rearwards under certain driving conditions.

The RS 5 will debut at an international motor show within the next few months, with first sales scheduled for July 2010.

Audi A1 Prototype Caught for First Time

Spies have caught the first images of the Audi A1 prototype being taken around the block. BMW-style black & white psychedelic camo cannot do enough to hide the Audi front grille. Just from these pictures it appears the car will have a longer wheelbase than its chief rivals. An Audi executive was recently quoted as saying several body variants were possible. Clearly this is a 3-door but a 5-door, a Cabriolet and a possible coupe/ roadster can be expected. Even an SUV cannot be discounted.

Engines would include a 1.8-litre TSI, some diesel units as well as hybrid or full-on electric. Drive would be placed mainly on the front wheels but a possible S1 might take a leaf from bigger S cars and use quattro AWD.

Audi is not yet at a stage where customers in the US are prepared to part with premium cash for an ultra-compact model. Therefore the A1 will not be launched for this market, not until such time as public attitudes at least improve.

Whether the A1 eventually looks more like the Metroproject Concept remains to be seen.

If our sources are correct, we’re weeks away from the unveiling of the first official photos of 2011 BMW 5 Series. In the mean time, 5 Series test mules continue testing across Europe.

The photos shown below were spotted in Germany and Austria, including some shots from the car doing the ‘Ring track. If most of the spy photos we’ve seen where giving us the 5er in a dark silver color, these latest ones show us the new 5 in the Milano Beige color.

A WCF reader has taken pictures of a BMW 1 Series Coupe in Munich. However, this is no ordinary 1er. According to our "spy" it features a carbon fibre roof and 19-inch wheels shod with 265/35 R19 Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. More interesting are the wide rear wheel arches which suggest an xDrive-equipped 1 Coupe could be undergoing testing. The 1 has not had AWD before so if it happens it would be a first.

What piqued our curiosity even more is the fact that these images were snapped on a road directly from BMW's M-GmbH. Munich has repeatedly stated that a 1 Series-based M car was out of the question. But two years ago a performance-bred 1 Series Coupe tii Concept car did the international motor show circuit. It featured carbon fibre materials and other lightweight construction substances.

The current ranger-topper is the RWD 135i Coupe with the BMW Performance Power Kit producing 240kW (326hp) and up to 450Nm of torque.

2011 Mercedes CLS Caught with Less Camouflage

A new set of photos featuring the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS surfaced this week. The photos show a car with less padding, giving us some insight into its design.

The prototype featured in the pictures appears to have a shorter trunk that smoothly integrates with the roofline. Windows appear to be bigger, and side mirrors are squared off. Headlights on the new model may be a bit more conventionally shaped, not quite rising as much towards the wheel-wells.

Taillights also take a new shape, stretching upwards instead of downwards. LEDs also appear to be present.

Previously spied were the vehicle's rectangular tailpipes and the sunroof. Both items are still seen in the new photos.

The new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS should be launched sometime next year. A BlueHybrid version of the "2+2" is expected, as well as petrol and diesel models ranging up to the 530+ horsepower AMG unit.

Audi A8 Prototype Hits the Ring

An Audi A8 prototype has been spied testing again.

The pics do not reveal anything new and what to expect from the next-generation of Audi's flagship sedan is based mostly on speculation.

But that the new A8 will be fitted with Audi's standard array of large engines is an easy guess to make. Those include the 3.0 liter TDI and the 4.2 liter V8 petrol/gasoline. Despite reports of the S8 being cancelled in America, perhaps and S8 will come with a variant of Audi's 5.0 liter V10 FSI engine as seen in the R8.

Questions arising, though, as to what new technology Audi will introduce into the A8 to keep it competitive, newsworthy and eco-friendly. Mercedes has an S-Class hybrid, as does BMW with the 7-Series, but there's been no word yet about any possible hybrid A8.

Likely to be featured is a second-generation of Audi's Aluminum Space Frame (ASF II) technology which makes the A8 standout in terms of engineering accomplishment. The aluminum frame keeps the A8 light and agile, a key distinction in this notoriously heavyweight class.

The next-generation Audi A8 will be making its debut sometime next year - maybe at the Geneva auto salon, or perhaps later at the Paris show in September. Audi will want to make sure that its flagship sedan will get the appropriate amount of fanfare for what is one of the most important launches for the German premium brand.

2010 Audi A1 Details Emerge

CAR magazine UK has reported on its candid conversation with Audi executives regarding the A1. According to CAR, the A1 will not only come in hatchback form but also as cabriolet and estate models potentially including quattro AWD.

"We will start with the three-door version with several different engine variants," Schwarzenbauer told CAR. "Will we do further models? Look at what we do with the A3 range - we could something similar with the A1."

That means probably anything from a 1.2-litre up to 1.8-litre turbo units, both petrol and diesel. Because the A1 will be a direct rival to the MINI, which is busy testing an electric model (MINI e), it may be safe to assume that alternative power sources are also on the cards here. We'd definitely be up for a performance S1 as well. And since MINI has all sorts of variations, including SUVs, two-seat Coupes and Roadsters coming up, expect the A1 to follow suit with similar offerings and even a possible Q1 SUV.

In terms of basic looks Audi has already given clues through the Metroproject Concept car (pictured here). The A1 is very important to Ingolstadt as it will add greater volumes and spur the company on with its plans to overtake BMW as the world's largest premium car manufacturer by 2015.

Unfortunately the A1 does not quite feature in the Audi's US plans as yet. Executives have said as much on a number of occasions.

These are the latest spy photos of Audi's hotly-anticipated RS5 Coupe that is expected to celebrate its world premiere at the next Geneva Salon in March of 2010. Compared to the S5 upon which it is based, the flat-black prototype you see pictured here is distinguished by a new front bumper with larger and more pronounced side air inlets, the honeycomb grille and the single-outlet tailpipes that replace the S5's two smaller outlets on each side of the rear bumper.

Furthermore, the black panels on the front and rear fenders of the test car clearly indicate that the RS5 will get a wider body with flared arches harking back to the original Quattro coupe as well as to the current RS6 saloon and Avant models.

The spy photos also suggest that the RS5 may get a deployable rear spoiler located at the tip of the boot.ers like the Mercedes-Benz CL (tba S-Class Coupe) and the Aston Martin DBS.

Porsche Panamera Cabriolet Rumours Surface

Porsche's four-door Panamera has only just started selling in countries like Germany and the UK but already there's talk of a topless Cabriolet. Rumours say the convertible will have two instead of four doors and cost about €11,000 (US$16,000) more than the sedan.

"We have a broad range of 14 derivatives of the 911 that are very successful," development chief Wolfgang Duerheimer told Automobilwoche. "So it stands to reason we should diversify the lineup for the Panamera as well."

New Porsche owners Volkswagen AG are keen to see the sports car maker increase its model range and thereby increasing its sales footprint. In addition, such an expensive platform as the Panamera's would have to pay for itself at some stage and spreading it around the group including to brands like Bentley and Audi would be good business.

While we are rolling on the speculative road why not bring up the previous rumour of a possible Panamera hard top Coupe? Logically it makes sense to build this variant as a match for a Cabriolet. It would also allow Porsche entry into the premium luxury GT segment occupied by current lead

BMW Simple Concept Revealed - On display at the BMW Museum

It is not often that we get to tell you about a car capable of reaching over 200 km/h, while using less than 2 liters of fuel per 100 km. Yesterday, BMW introduced such a concept vehicle at the company's museum in Munich. With angles like a stealth bomber, the BMW Simple concept is a three-wheeler that measures just 110 centimeters wide. It is meant to combine the protective qualities of an automobile, with the speed and maneuverability of a motorcycle.

The name "Simple" is meant as a first-letter mnemonic, standing for, "A sustainable and innovative mobility product for low energy consumption." It is both lightweight and aerodynamic, helping it to be ultra-efficient. The 450 kilogram vehicle produces 50 grams of CO2 per 100 km.

Built as a solution to urban traffic jams, the car has a shorter length than the MINI Cooper. Despite this, height was kept about level with the BMW 5er to provide a decent level of comfort and headroom.

Performance is aided by an automatic tilting technology, where one side of the car is lifted when going into a corner. The vehicle's hydraulics keep the car stable whether going slow, or if the driver attempts to drift. Despite the respectable top speed, acceleration is much slower than many motorcycles. Utilizing a 48 horsepower engine, the BMW Simple travels from 0 to 100 km/h in about ten seconds.

Also introduced was the BMW Clever concept, or "Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport," first seen in 2006. The seven-year old project is just 3 meters long by 1 meter wide by 1.4 meters tall, and weighs less than 400 kg. It has enough room for two people inside its aluminum space frame.

With a 230 cc CNG engine, the Clever gets to 60 km/h in about seven seconds. It has a top speed of 100 km/h, and a range of 200 km. The low price of compressed natural gas translates to a cost of roughly one euro per 100 km, when carrying two people.

The Clever is surprisingly safe as well, using a Formula One-inspired crash absorbtion system. Special airbags and seatbelts means this car actually complies with Euro NCAP crash testing standards, even in a 56 km/h head-on collision.

Both vehicles are on display now at the BMW Museum in Munich.

Next Generation 2012 Mercedes B-Class First Spy Photos

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class (codename W245) has been in production since 2005 and it experienced a facelift in 2008. Coming soon in 2011 an all-new model hits the streets. These spy pictures reveal a longer vehicle than the current one as well as a roofline that doesn't slope to the rear. Instead it's the window line which flows lower as it approaches the front end.

Because it replaces both the current A and B-Class, Mercedes-Benz is said to be planning a number of variants including a coupe cabriolet, a sporty hatch (subject of these photos) and a five-door coupe. Only the hatch has been confirmed though.

Power sources will include turbo petrols and diesels, while hybrid and fuel cell models will be added to the line-up. At the moment the most potent is the 2.0-litre powered B200 Turbo worth 145kW (197hp) and 280Nm of torque.

Rumours indicate for the first time the B-Class will also be available to US consumers.

The BlueZero concept which appeared in near production form in Detroit earlier this year is widely believed to foreshadow the overall design of the 2012 B-Class.

BMW M5 (F10) Nurburgring Spy Video

Partly shot at the Nurburgring the clip takes us through just under four minutes of footage. At 00:59 you'll seen a Nissan GT-R seemingly chasing the M5. What a future battle that will be for motoring media. At several points in the video, particularly at 3:17, the turbos can be heard spooling up and pitching quite high.

BMW begins selling the new 5 Series globally in 2010 and the M5 should follow around a year later. It is thought that BMW's 4.4-litre twin turbo machine will also do duty for the bahnstomer but instead of 300kW (408hp) or 408kW (555hp) it will produce something close to 430kW (585hp).

Speculation is that an 8-speed sequential transmission will send all power to the rear wheels with the assistance of an electronic differential. To improve driving dynamics and fuel efficiency, weight will be kept as low as possible using sophisticated light body construction materials.

Spy photographers have been working overtime again and today, we have a new set of BMW 5 Series spy shots. Due to launch at Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, the next generation 5 Series is in the final testing stage.

By entering the Final Evaluation Phase, the new 5 Series is going through a variety of testing scenarios to correct any issues that might arise in real life driving. The test mule still sports the funky BMW camouflage, but if our sources are correct, the first official photos will hit our inbox sometimes before year-end.

2011 BMW 5 Series grows a few inches both in length and width, but one of BMW’s goals was to keep the car at the current weight levels. To achieve this, extensive aluminum in the exterior panels have been used. The next 5 Series also uses a new all-steel chassis with some special techniques to process the steel tubes.

While the front-end is not much of a secret anymore – corona ring white LEDs, larger grille and the aggressive bumper leaked earlier this year – the rear-end remains a mystery. None of the photoshops we’ve seen so far seem to come close to what the taillights design will look like and the design lines on the rear-bumper or trunk are still hidden underneath the tape.

The interior design shares some design elements with the 7 Series models, from the steering wheel with multi-control buttons to the beautiful dashboard and Black Panel tachometers. High quality materials are giving the new 5 Series interior a more luxurious feel and look.

Turbocharged engines will be the core of the new 5 Series line-up. The new 4.4L twin-turbo V8 from the X6 and new 550i GT will power the high-end 5er, but a variety of other turbo engines will be available as well, including diesel powerplants. A hybrid version is rumored to be in works as well, but it will be revealed at a much later date.

Not many 5 Series test mules have been spotted on U.S. soil so far, but moving into the winter, we expect to see some of them moving into the Californian desert.

Mercedes SLS AMG Flies onto the Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart [Video]

No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. Mercedes hoisted their new supercar to the roof terrace of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Resting 42 meters (137.8') above ground, the car is part of a new exhibit dedicated to the awe-inspiring SLS AMG.

According to the Museum's Managing Director, Michael Bock, "This super sports car stands for excitement, passion and high-tech. As museum for the past, present and future of the automobile, we provide an ideal setting for the exclusive presentation of the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG."

Despite appearances, Mercedes didn't modify the COMAND system to allow the gullwing doors to act as real wings. Instead, they hired a 120-ton hydraulic crane to do the heavy lifting.

As we have previously reported, the SLS AMG features a 6.3-liter V8 engine with 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Nm of torque. Backed up by a seven-speed double clutch transmission, the V8 enables the car to rocket from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph).

BMW Rumored to Badge Engineer MINI-Platform for 2013 '0-Series'

This tidbit of information comes to us care of Car Magazine's print edition, which Jalopnik.com has reported on online.

BMW will be building a competitor to the Audi A1 and the Mercedes A-Class. The so-called '0-Series', apparently referred to internally as the UKL1 (Untere Kompactklasse, or sub-compact) over at BMW, will be based on the third-generation MINI platform and, hence, be BMW's first front-wheel drive model.

What's striking about this news is that BMW has always been a strict rear-wheel drive automaker, a trademark that distinguishes it from its fellow premium brand competitors. BMW will be going back on a promise never to make a front-drive model. The sub-compact range is scheduled for a market release in 2013.

According to the report, the UKL1/0-series will be offered as both a 3-door and 5-door hatch, with a two-seat roadster variant also in the works. BMW will also develop a couple of brand new 3 and 4-cylinder engines to power the new range.

The 0-series will likely be built at the same plant in Oxford in the U.K. where MINI models are assembled.

Now, does calling it the 0-Series make sense or does it just seem ridiculous? Hard to say.

Mercedes S-Class Coupe Caught Testing Again

Engines expected in the S-Class Coupe will be the same as featured in the sedan variant. A 5.5 liter V8 and 3.0 liter diesel will be available, the diesel also likely to be offered with BlueEfficiency technology for improved fuel economy.That drivetrain is made up of a 3.5 liter V6 gasoline engine with 279 hp coupled to a 20 hp electric motor providing a total of 385 Nm of torque. Fuel economy on the S400 BlueHybrid sedan is a healthy 7.9 liters/100 km, though, some critics contend you'd be better off with the 3.0 liter diesel.

2011 Mercedes CLS AMG Caught Testing

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS AMG has been spied testing out in the open. While the normal CLS has been caught a number of times, this is the first time that we see the high-performance AMG model strutting its stuff in public. Its side mirror indicators have the same design style as the E-Class sedan and the four oval tailpipes are an obvious indication regardless of the heavy camouflage.

The current CLS 63 AMG shares its engine with the previous-generation E 63 AMG and both make 378kW (514hp). If the same arrangement sticks then expect to see a 6.3-litre V8 installed and making 386kW (525hp). Driving the rear wheels should be Merc's Speedshift MCT 7-speed gearbox. Just like the E 63 AMG standard wheels should be 18-inches with the 19-inch size listed on the options menu.

Sales of the CLS 63 AMG should begin in 2011. Segment rivals will include the new Porsche Panamera Turbo and the high-performance version of Aston Martin's new Rapide. Audi will also enter this four-door coupe segment with the A7.

On Board with BMW ActiveHybrid 7 in Motion During Frankfurt Debut

BMW constructed the circuit to showcase all of their Frankfurt introductions in full motion, something unique for the show. After a few minutes following the ActiveHybrid X6 around the circuit, the car proceeds past a "who's who" of vehicles behind the scenes before parking alongside other BMW cars.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 comes with a 449-horsepower 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces up to 479 ft-lb of torque. Those figures boost to 465 hp and 516 ft-lb when combined with the three-phase synchronous electric motor.

Despite hitting the 100 km/h mark in 4.9 seconds, the vehicle consumes only modest amounts of fuel. The 7er ActiveHybrid uses 9.4 liters of fuel per 100 km, or roughly 24mpg (29 mpg Imperial).

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Cabrio Spied on the Nürburgring

Spies have snapped a barrage of new photos featuring the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Cabrio. The car was seen on the Nürburgring following extended hot weather testing in the US.

The car was seen rolling around the wet German track, not taking full advantage of its engine. It is believed that the car uses the AMG-produced 571 horsepower 6.3-liter V8 engine available on the SLS. That engine produces up to 650 Nm of torque. On the SLS, top speed is limited to 315 km/h, or roughly 195 mph.

A low four-second 0-100 km/h time is expected on the car, as engineers should be capable of keeping the weight down.

2011 Audi A8 Prototype Already Shedding Some Camouflage - Spied Hot Weather Testing

The new Audi A8 was caught by spies as it underwent hot weather testing. This new set of photos shows the prototype with a little less camouflage than before. Audi's flagship car is expected to get several efficient V6 and V8 engines, as well as the 258 horsepower 3.0-liter TDI that produces upwards of 258 horsepower.

In the latest set of photos, we are able to see what the vehicle looks like with LED daytime runners. The end of these lights lead towards the grille, which appears to be distinctly separated into an upper and lower section, unlike on the current model. Absolutely do not be surprised if this changes, although the new bumper appears to have space for integrated fog lamps. The rear section of the vehicle looks a bit more prominent as well, and should also include LEDs. Through the rear glass we can also see a bit of the interior.

Audi is rumored to unveil the new Audi A8 by the end of the year as a 2010 model, but a Geneva appearance is also possible. Whether or not it will be offered as either a hybrid or electric remains to be seen.

Porsche Boxster R: Spy shots!

.our sources inside Porsche have revealed that this open-top is a special, harder version of the sports car that will be revealed by the end of 2009, probably at the LA show.

Externally this special edition differs from its banal brothers thanks to a lower front bumper (with single rather than double strakes across the intakes – all important to the people that might buy this car), plus new side intakes and a bigger rear spoiler. And beneath that disguised rear deck is thought to be a double-bubble Speedster-style hump.

Under the skin this new Porsche is expected to use the 3.4-litre flat-six currently found in the Boxster S, but with a few tweaks to lift power closer to 320bhp.

BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept Officially Unveiled at Frankfurt Preview Event [video]

BMW hosted a preview event to the IAA in Frankfurt where its Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid super car concept was officially unveiled. Company chairman and CEO Dr. Norbert Reithofer spoke and said something very interesting regarding his company's preferred future powertrain solution.

"The car needs to evolve through innovation," said Reithofer . "We are the engine more efficient and make the total of vehicle technology more optimally. In addition, Hybrid is also for us a temporary solution. And especially for large metropolitan areas, a car is needed for electric base. We will continue our research work which hydrogen regard."

So it seems that although the Vision EfficientDynamics is extremely advanced in engine and body construction technology, it is not the final solution for the foreseeable, sustainable future.

To recap the 2+2 seater is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo diesel hybrid with a total system output of 262kW (356 hp) and maximum torque 800Nm (590 lb-ft). It goes to all four wheels via two electric motors located on both the front and rear axles. The 0 - 100km/h sprint time is 4.8 seconds and peak velocity is electronically limited to 250km/h.

The car's acceleration and top speed performance are stunning considering it has an average fuel consumption figure of 3.76 litres/100 km (75.1 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km.

2010 Porsche GT3 RS Autobahn Shakedown and Overview [Video]

This year at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Porsche is revealing the updated 997 Porsche GT3 RS.

Manager of High Performance Cars for Porsche, Andreas Preuninger, gave us the opportunity to ride shotgun as he took the first produced 2010 Porsche GT3 RS out for a ride on the Autobahn yesterday evening. Due to traffic, he was only able to get the car up to 292kph (181 mph) on the unrestricted A5 Autobahn.

The second half of the video, Andreas tells us what went into the development process for the new GT3 RS and what the car is capable of doing with the new technology and performance upgrades from the previous generation.

2011 Porsche Boxster Spied on Nurburgring

New spy shots of the 2011 Porsche Boxster made their way to WCF headquarters today. Although it is just ten months since the debut of the current Boxster Facelift, the Stuttgart-based automaker looks like it is well into development of the new vehicle.

Spied on the 'Ring, the Boxster is still showing off a cloth roof, and we get another look at the rear LED light clusters. Beyond that, it looks evident that the front end is bulging and somewhat elongated, but not massively. All around the car, it is more of the same: same spoiler, same third brake light, same sidesills, same vents, etc. Instead, we expect there to be some solid differences to the mechanics, and possibly weight reductions, instead of a radical new design. After all, the old design just came out.

Nonetheless, look for the 2011 Porsche Boxster to have a refined front and rear fascia as well as a new rear light cluster. Something beyond mechanics will be needed to entice potential customers. Hopefully, Porsche will finish with the mule, and begin testing the production prototype. We'll bring you any new shots as soon as they appear.

2011 BMW 5 Series further details surface - Active Hybrid 5

A very reliable insider from BMW has shared some interesting titbits about the next 5 Series. Slated for a 2010 arrival the 5 will be sold as a 2010 model in countries like the US. With rivals fast catching up and some even overtaking the car, BMW has apparently planned a reply that will silence critics and regain it some lost market share, especially in regions like Germany where the Audi A6 and the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class have made serious sales inroads.

An important aspect of automotive development for the 5 is weight. Several methods were used to reduce the weight which is good for both performance and fuel consumption. Such measures include using lighter body construction materials and producing parts like water pumps, transmission cases and suspension mounts out of lighter substances.

Although quite related to the 5 Series GT, the sedan will only share a minimum number of body panels with its four-seater sibling. Among them are the door handles, the side indicator lights and the side mirrors.

BMW has deliberately designed the car to look more compact than it actually is in order to help it stand out in a segment populated by cars that look quite large. The short overhangs, the low roofline and the wide track will ensure a lot of this happens.

EfficientDynamics systems are now an everyday part of most BMWs sold in Europe so expect to see the next evolution of the fuel-saving measures. Still on fuel, the 2011 5 Series will be fitted with hybrid power for two models. The first will be the same mild ActiveHybrid system used in the 7 Series while the other will be one from the X6 ActiveHybrid. Instead of the V8 petrol though the car will use a 3.0d engine.

Mercedes SLS AMG Cabrio Caught during Hot Weather Testing

Looks like Mercedes-Benz is planning a whole range of models for its upcoming SLS AMG supercar. The petrol coupe has been somewhat detailed and a confirmed electric drive version is in the works. Now the convertible has been caught testing in the heat of the California desert.

Spies saw clues of a retractable roof despite the heavy camouflage and doors that look like they are conventional. That means the SLS convertible will lose its "gullwing" status if these remain as they are on the spied prototype. The normal door handles are further pointers to a standard ingress and egress system, as opposed to the coupe's low-mounted ones.

Mercedes-Benz has engineered the SLS to counter its perceived lack of grunt - 420kW/ 571hp which isn't exactly a mind-blowing supercar figure, by minimising weight gains. The coupe is said to accelerate from 0 - 100km/h in 3.8 seconds and top off at 315km/h. Convertibles are normally a little slower than their hard-top counterparts so the same is expected of this one.

The SLS should be making an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in just over a month.

Audi RS5 Latest Spy Photos

Audi's 2010 RS5 coupe has once again been spotted undergoing high performance testing on Germany's famous Nürburgring.

While the new photos don't reveal any additional details, the matte black paint scheme is simply out of this world. Up front, the RS5 is distinguished by larger, more aggressive air intakes and a revised mesh grille. Other styling tweaks include 15-spoke alloy wheels, a more pronounced rear spoiler, and a massive dual exhaust system.

As we have previously reported, the RS5 will come equipped with a powerful 4.2-liter V8 engine with at least 450hp (331kW). Boasting quattro AWD and a standard six-speed manual transmission (a seven-speed R Tronic gearbox will be optional), the RS5 is expected to accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than 5 seconds. Audi will likely limit the top speed to 250km/h (155mph), but aftermarket tuners will surely fix that.

Look for the 2010 Audi RS5 to be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

2011 Porsche Cayenne most revealing spy photos yet

The Porsche 911 ultimately defined the Porsche look. But these days it seems the Panamera is the one taking this design language forward. Seen here are the latest and clearest spy pictures of the upcoming 2011 Cayenne yet.

The only parts that are fully covered are the front and rear ends but happily the protruding headlights are fully-Panamera compliant. The rear lights are new and so is the third window, taped up as it is. While the Cayenne is still an SUV it looks more compact now perhaps as a response to the general auto industry trend of sizing down.

Porsche has been testing the vehicle over many different parts and surfaces, even going as far as putting it on the Nürburgring. After all, it still is a Porsche and as such is expected to handle a certain way. Plans are to make it lighter and more fuel efficient. The current model features a turbo diesel motor as one of its engines so that idea should carry into the next model. A Cayenne hybrid version is in the cards too.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2010 with the first customer deliveries to take place later in the year. A production version is sure to be exhibited during one of the major international shows, including Los Angeles.

Audi A8 prototype mocks Mitsubishi jet-fighter front grill

Could this be a new Audi A8?

We should not assume anything here (because you know what that does) but it does seem like this is a short-wheelbase A8 under an A6 shell carrying an upside-down Mitsubishi badge and jet-fighter front grill.

This scoop comes to us courtesy of a VW Vortex forum and Autoblog, and the photos show what is definitely not a Mitsubishi driving along the highway in the Southwest of the United States. The road warrior (Autoblog reader Ryan on a cross-country trip) who snapped the pictures believed it to be a new A6 undergoing testing, after having spotted some camouflaged VW Routan's earlier in the trip. But the details (and Audi's product time-line) seem to point to a new A8 iteration.

A next-generation A8 was expected to debut at the Frankfurt motor show this September, although, there seem to be no indications from Audi that that will occur. But the new A8 is expected to make its debut in the market sometime in the latter part of 2010.

Looking at the design features of the model pictured here, the furrowed-brow headlights, linebacker shoulder lines, bonnet ridges and the long, swooping C-pillar all point to a flagship Audi sedan.

By the way, is Audi allowed to use a Mitsubishi badge as a cover for a prototype?

Just asking.

BMW Concept Vision Z Rendered

Hardly a day has gone by since pictures of the BMW EfficientDynamics Vision / Vision Z were released into the Internet. Yet well-regarded automotive artist Jon Sibal has created a full rendering of the car based on the covered images. It is a rushed job as you can probably tell, something the artist fully admits.

Using the trusted Photoshop digital tool Sibal went underneath the car's skin and imagined what details could be hidden there. The front end features an upturned kidney grille, a sharp headlight area, the traditional BMW "Hoffmeister kink" on the C-pillar (but with a new shape surround). The rims did not impress the artist and so he replaced them with something that was better suited to his tastes. As the concept is missing side mirrors, so is the rendering.

Official words from BMW indicate that the concept will redefine the sports car segment with its innovative technologies in many auto spheres. Should we hold our collective breaths?

Spied BMW concept is not the Z Vision Concept car slated for Frankfurt

iMotormag is reporting that this is, in fact, not the Z Vision Concept rumored to be headed to the Frankfurt motor show, as it was previously believed to be. A call put in to BMW had the Bavarian automaker deny that.

BMW claims this is a five year old design study car that is being moved from their design studio in Germany to be put into storage somewhere.

Our colleagues at iMotormag speculate that this concept may be a precursor to a possible, future BMW 3-Series GT. Or maybe not.

BMW will be premiering a new concept car dubbed EfficientDynamics Vision at the Frankfurt show next month alongside its new 5-series GT and the X1 compact SUV. It remains to be seen what that is.

BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible Facelift Spy Photos

Just over a year ago BMW unveiled the facelifted 3 Series sedan. The time will soon come for the Coupe and the Convertible to show their faces in full too. But for now we must satisfy our curiosity with these spy pictures of both models doing final testing before their public debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Modifications include a new front bumper, headlamps, LED rear lights and a new rear bumper. Previous spy pictures showed only the front bumper in disguise but these snapped shots show the true changes. Both models will exhibit these changes when unveiled in September.

Since BMW has a habit of escorting a new product launch or update with a new engine or an upgraded one, our curiosity is running at full speed trying to figure out which new powerplant will accompany these cars. That information might leak out ahead of the show. If not then the wait will be a long one.

Mercedes Benz S-Class Stretched Limousine Facelift Spied

The facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class was shown in April this year. Now spies have caught the stretch limousine version of the car being tested. The front end seems to feature a new bumper and LED lights will be part of its appearance. The limo appears to be on some sort of skid pan in what looks like the standard training exercise conducted by Mercedes-Benz for drivers and sometimes owners of these cars.

Mercedes-Benz is big on stretched limousines and has a good chunk of the market in many countries. This particular car should be 6.4 metres long and weigh more than two tones.

The current S-Class Pullman Guard is powered by a 5.5-litre V12 bi-turbo engine that makes a heady 380kW (517hp) and 830Nm of torque. Peformance figures are not the same as the standard-length car because of the extra security features installed, such as thicker windows. It also has body resistance for certain types of hand guns, some explosives, runs on runflat tyres and has an interior fire extinguisher fitted.

The Pullman Guard is not just a semi-armoured tank but a proper S-Class as well, which means a luxurious interior suited to the kind of money paid for such a car.

Our spy photographers have managed to catch new video of Mercedes' upcoming 2012 SLK roadster.

Like previous mules, this prototype is heavily camouflaged which prevents us from getting a glimpse of the car's new styling. Regardless, the convertible appears to adopt a more chiseled appearance that seems to dismiss much of the current model's shapely curves. The SLR-inspired nose is also expected to disappear, in favor of a more conventional grille which will likely echo the new E-Class Coupe.

Although details are limited, power is expected to be provided by the usual mix of naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines. Rumor suggests the new SLK may offer a turbo diesel engine, but that remains to be seen. Despite mounting concerns about fuel economy and emissions, several sources are indicating the AMG version will feature a new twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 with 470hp (350kW).

Expect more information to leak out as the redesigned SLK approaches it's 2012 launch date.

Bugatti Bordeaux second teaser image surfaces

A second teaser image of Bugatti's upcoming Bordeaux super sedan has surfaced.

The new picture shows the rear end of Bugatti's highly anticipated sedan. While we can't make out a lot of details, it is clear the Bordeaux features a distinctive design thanks to two horizontal horseshoe taillights and a large vertical center taillight which suggests the car may have a split rear window. Below the unique lighting display, we can see twin sets of quad tailpipes.

While details are scarce, the Veyron's quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine is expected to see duty in the new sedan. This likely means the Bordeaux will boast 1001 hp and 1250 Nm of torque, which should earn it the title of being the fastest and most powerful sedan ever created.

The picture reportedly comes from an invitation to an event which takes place during the Frankfurt Motor Show, so expect a concept version of the Bordeaux to debut in September.

Spy Photos: BMW 3 Series GT

Almost unnoticed, the BMW 3 Series GT showed up during an early stage test drive somewhere in Germany. The secrecy around this new niche model from BMW is bigger than ever and not many information have leaked so far.

But here is what we know so far: the PAC, short for Progressive Activity Coupe, is built on a long-wheel base 3 Series. The Progressive Activity Coupe has a higher roof when compared to the existing 3 Series Wagon and of course, a longer wheelbase as well. Following the steps of its “bigger brother”, 5 Series Gran Turismo, the 3 GT will be available in a smaller segment and will share some personalization features such as optional bench or individual seating . It will bring a personal approach to luxury and will differentiate itself from the Wagon model.

Since it’s based on a 3 Series platform, BMW’s plans are to maintain the performance and dynamics seen on the other 3er models. The engine range will include the latest six cylinder turbo(N55) found in the GT and the latest six cylinder diesel , additional petrol and diesels will include BMW’s upcoming four cylinder Turbocharged petrol engine and the four cylinder diesel.

Spy Photos: 2012 Five-Door BMW 1 Series spotted

Another week and some more spy photos of the next generation BMW 1 Series which will make its debut in 2012. This time, the spy photographers capture on camera a five-door 1 Series test mule during a testing session in Germany.

Judging by these photos, we are clearly looking at the 5-door hatchback, part of the future large 1 Series family. Now what makes these latest spy shots even more interesting is the RoaDyn Measuring Wheel System which uses a sensor to monitor the dynamic measurement of force and torque. Similar systems have been used before by engineers in the tuning process of AWD platforms.

Of course, we can only speculate at this point that we’re looking at an xDrive 1er model, but nonetheless, it was worth mention it.

We already know that BMW is looking to launch an extensive 1 Series line-up, from a 3-door touring, 3 and 5-door GT to 5-door hatchback and a 3-door Coupe and Convertible. A high-performance model, similar to an M car, is in works as well and sources close to BMW use the codename Supersports when referring to it.

BMW X1 Officially Released with HD Video

BMW has released official details of the new X1 SUV (SAV). The smallest X vehicle in the range is 4.45 metres long, has a wheelbase of 2.76 metres, is 1.545 metres high and the lightest model weighs in at 1,615kg (EU). It is designed to have a low-slung rear window to make it look the sporting car that it is, and it features wide wheel arches for an aggressive squat. The signature kidney grille is as bold and muscular as it is on the 7 Series. Standard wheels coming with the range are 17-inch alloys.

Contours and sharp lines are evident all the way to the sides and back, including the "Hofmeister kink" at the C pillar. Further confirming that this is a true BMW design are the L-shaped rear lights clusters with sharp jagged edges.

Inside the X1 gives an elevated seating position to each passenger while the driver benefits from a driver-facing "surfboard" dashboard that made BMWs of yesteryear so different from their rivals. The new iDrive system is installed and can be mated to a USB port, a CD player, and six Pro Logic 7 HiFi loud speakers. A rear parking camera and/or Park Distance Control can also be specified from the options list.

Six models will be available at launch. Only one of these is petrol-powered and that is the X1 xDrive28i. Fitted to this version is the 3.0-litre straight six with 258hp (190kW) and torque of 310Nm. The rest of the lineup runs on diesel, starting with the sDrive18d making 143hp (105kW) and 320Nm of torque. Then comes the sDrive20d which produces 177hp (130kW) and 350Nm. Both these RWD vehicles are coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Higher up the rung are the manual xDrive18d with the same figures of 143hp (105kW) and 320Nm, an xDrive20d of 177hp (130kW) and 350Nm as well as the thrusty xDrive23d. It has the 2.0-litre twin turbo motor that does 204hp (150kW) and 400Nm of maximum pulling power.

Customers living in the USA will start getting their consignment of the BMW X1 some time in 2011. US-bound engines and powertrains will be confirmed closer to launch.

Audi A8 teaser image discovered

The first teaser image promoting the Audi A8 has recently been found. Standing with the cloth-covered A8 is Audi's Board Member for Technical Development, Michael Dick.

Few things are clearly visible in the picture other than Dick. We can see the now-signature Audi LED daytime lights through the sheet, but we also notice a car that could be a little shorther than the current generation. The rear windshield of the car also looks to have a bit of a sharp angle, something that contradicts the official sketch of the car released by Audi last October.

According to Autovisie, the photo was buried in a collection of promotional materials released by the automaker as part of a 100th anniversary celebration.

The Audi A8 is expected to hit the market in 2010 with four engine options, including petrol and diesel versions of a 3.0-liter and 4.2-liter V8. Should a S8 model be released, it could receive a 5.0-liter V10 FSI that unleashes 620 horsepower.

Built with a next generation Aluminum Space Frame, the 2010 Audi A8 was supposed to be shown off in Frankfurt this September but recent reports state this has been postponed despite the "surfacing" of this teaser image.

Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing images leaked

The leaks are starting to flow. Just within the past week we saw the latest spy photos of an SLS Gullwing in grey, more official "teaser" images were published, and today rumours of an SLS Gullwing electric vehicle is slated for 2015. But the day isn't over yet and another very legitimate looking image revealing the front and rear design details has surfaced.

Here we have two very different versions of the same grainy image. The first of which is clearly a magazine cover from Autobild with a bonus rear shot, and the second version from Autowerald.com in The Netherlands is the source image without the clutter.

WCF sources state the images are genuine. Judging from the generic studio background and lack of computer touch-up work, they could be preview images for dealers or existing clientele. Additionally, the type of low resolution picture quality, even visible on the magazine cover version, suggests the source images are from a printed brochure or magazine and then captured using a mobile phone camera.

Public unveiling in Frankfurt is only two months away. Judging by all of the recent leaks and releases, an official media release could happen very soon.

2011 BMW 5 Series sedan spied with less disguise - showing its shape

So far, we've seem to have faired better in snatching some spy shots of the next-generation 5-series wagon rather than those of the sedan model. But here's a few shots of the upcoming new 5-series standard sedan, expected to roll into town sometime in 2010.

Now, what do these pics tell us? Not much, because the camouflage is still pretty distracting and quite effective at disguising any changes to the design. Of course, those changes will be subtle, anyway. But shape-wise, the new 5-series seems to be a little more tightly carved. Looking trim, sportier and more like a 3-series than the 7-series it is often compared to. Although, we have had previous spy shots of the 5-series tourer revealing some design cues from its senior sibling, such as with the tail lights.

The 5-series will be expected to come with a wide range of engines currently in the BMW stable. Those include both the 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder and the 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engines. On the lower end of the scale, there will also be 2.0 liter petrol and diesel engines packing enough punch to properly power this mid-range premium model.

The one snapshot of the interior also, unfortunately, doesn't reveal much. But with German brands, the progression of models is always more evolutionary than revolutionary. Expect more of a nodding-of-your-head-in-satisfactory-approval response rather than an elated-popping-of-the-eyes one.

Next gen 2012 Audi A3 mule first spy photos

Our spy photographers have managed to catch the first images of Audi's upcoming 2012 A3.

Like previous prototype Audis, this A3 mule is wearing a Volkswagen body to divert attention. While the Golf body prevents us from seeing the A3's new styling, the extended fenders suggest the car will grow a few inches in width. So far, our only indication of A3's exterior design comes from a leaked image that supposedly shows the car's Q5-inspired rear hatch.

Engine options will likely include the 105hp (75kW) 1.2-liter TSI, the 141hp (104kW) 1.4-liter TSI, and the 173hp (127kW) 1.8-liter TSI. We can also expect a variety of diesel engines, with a rumored 207hp (152kW) 2.0-liter TDI taking the top spot.

As we have previously reported, Michael Dick, a member of Audi's board of management for technical development, has stated that Audi is considering an RS3. If such a model were to be produced, it would likely feature the 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine from the TT-RS. Packing 340hp and 450Nm of torque, the RS3 would probably rocket from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds before hitting an estimated top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h).

In an attempt to establish a greater foothold in the North America, Audi is also considering an A3 sedan which is designed to appeal to hatch-hating Americans.

Porsche's Panamera lineup is poised to expand as the company is reportedly working on a new diesel variant as well as a high performance GTS.

Although little is known about the Panamera GTS, it is expected to be positioned above the Panamera Turbo. This means the GTS will likely boast more than 500 horsepower, which should enable it to beat the 4.0 second 0-60 mph time of the Panamera Turbo. The GTS is also expected to ditch the Turbo's heavy air suspension system, in favor of traditional coil springs.

According to Autocar, Porsche is also considering a diesel-powered Panamera. If such a model were to be built, it would likely adopt a modified version of the Cayenne's 240 bhp 3.0-liter V6 or the Audi A8's 322 bhp 4.2-liter V8.

Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG In Depth

More details of the Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG have been released. The car is the top-of-the-range model and features certain equipment that other E-Class models don't. Most important of these and the one that makes it stand out is the 6.3-litre (6208 cc) V8 engine that has remained naturally aspirated. Its maximum rated power is 386kW (525hp) and peak torque is 630Nm mated with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL 63 AMG. Incidentally the power figures of the two über Benzes are now matched. The conventional torque converter has been done away with in favour of a wet start-up clutch. Three changing modes can be actuated; Controlled Efficiency, Sport, and Manual. The latter is the more fun option where the driver changes gears using either the paddles behind the steering wheel or the gear lever itself.

Mercedes-Benz says the E 63 AMG will accelerate from 0 - 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds and top off at an electronically limited speed of 250km/h (155mph). Stopping power can be assisted by the optional ceramic brakes. Lightweight forged 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with size 255/35 R 19 tyres at the front and 285/30 R 19 at the rear are fitted. Other differences include an AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid, a roller blind for rear window, Nappa leather appointments for the seats, the top section of the dashboard, the beltlines, the door armrests as well as the centre console and door centre panels.

AMG has chosen to use a new speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering system for more direct responsiveness. It helps when cornering hard, helped by the newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension, but is comfort-friendly too when the suspension system is in comfort mode. Thus the day-to-day usability of the car is not compromised by its high performance abilities. Even the ESP can be personalised, from "on", to "sport" to "off".

VW BlueSport Concept: Driving report!

What's the Bluesport like on the road then?

Surprisingly good - it feels absolutely rock solid and creak free on the move, with crisp steering, responsive brakes and a decent suspension set-up. The 258lb ft has no trouble in shifting the concept’s 1300 kilos (the production car will weigh closer to 1.2 tonnes) and the big brakes easily pull the Bluesport to a pause.

The big wheels cause it to tramline a little, but overall the allegedly unfinished car provides a remarkably smooth and balanced drive. It's a beautifully balanced car.
And inside?

A joy – it’s minimalist, but it doesn’t feel meagre either thanks to the easy-to-use touch-screen MMI and climate control dials that glow blue or red depending on the temperature you set. The driving position is low, but there’s plenty of leg and elbow room, and the black leather-trimmed seats are very comfortable.

The bright orange roof is also a thing of beauty, weighs only 27kg, and despite the mid-engined layout and cubby for the folding hood, there's 112 litres of storage space in the nose and another 70 in the rear.

Okay, for the last time - BMW X1 Spy Photos

We keep promising that the X1 is coming out soon, but it hasn’t happened so far. We expected the official photos to drop prior to the event that took place at the Leipzig factory this past weekend.

Obviously we were a bit wrong, but the latest information out of the rumormill says that within days, the press release will drop on the web and we will FINALLY see or criticize the X1.

In the mean time, we decided to post the last spy photos of the BMW X1 and this time, we will keep our word. As much as we enjoy this game, the photos seem to be the same over and over, just slightly different colors.

With that being said, the fellows at vroom.be are responsible for bringing these spy shots of a slightly covered silver X1. And once again, we’re confused….can’t decide if we will fall for it or simply hate it. One thing we know for sure, we dig it more than the current X3.

Now with the new redesigned and larger X3 coming out, it will be difficult to chose one or the other, it will most likely come down for us to which one is more efficient. After driving the X5d for over 1,800 miles, we realized that fuel efficiency is an important factor for us and probably for other people as well.Give us an X1 xDrive23d with over 35 MPG and we’re sold on it.

Bottom line, we have no doubt that the BMW X1 has its place in the BMW line-up and it makes sense even more in the European market. A young demographic is what BMW aims for and this might be the key.

Mercedes AMG Driving Academy Returns with the 2011 Mercedes SLS AMG

AMG enthusiasts lucky enough to live in the US and pocketed enough to afford track training fees upwards of US$2,200 can get their hands on the brand new SLS AMG for a few hours. The AMG Driving Academy is being launched Stateside over three tracks; Lime Rock Park (Lime Rock, CT) - September 9 - 15, Palm Beach International Raceway (West Palm Beach, FL) - September 22 - 27 and Laguna Seca Raceway (Monterey, CA) - November 7 - 8 and 17 - 20.

Founded in Affalterbach in 2007 the academy aims to stimulate customers' senses through the experience of driving their favourite AMGs around a controlled and safe environment under the guidance of professionals.

Cars to be used are the E63 AMG, the SL63 AMG, the C63 AMG, the SLK55 AMG and the CLK63 AMG Black Series. The main treat is of course the SLS AMG course which is conducted at Laguna Seca Raceway, includes an overnight stay at the InterContinental Hotel in Monterey and costs US$2,295.

There are two other programmes on offer. The AMG Driving Academy Stage I is a one-day course that teaches the fundamentals of performance driving and car control. Students will get a chance to test their skills later in the day. Expect to pay US$1,895 per person.

Lastly participants can go with the AMG Driving Academy Stage II two-day programme that gets quite technical and in-depth. Drivers will only be allowed to enrol if they have completed the first stage or something similar. It will cost US$3,495 per participant.

Audi A5 Sportback Caught Completely Undisguised at Photo Shoot

The Audi A5 Sportback has been out and about it seems. These spy pictures of the four door hatch/ coupe were taken during a campus photo shoot in which the car was starring. Presumably the resulting official pictures will form part of a soon-to-launch marketing campaign, perhaps end up in a leaked brochure? We can only wish.

Nevertheless these are clear enough to indicate where the A5 Sportback lies in terms of positioning and styling. For the family man who desires the fastback action of the A5 coupe's lines but can't convince the missus of the importance of a sporty two-door GT to a man's overall wellbeing, the Sportback calls. Imagine 480 litres (980 with rear seats folded) of cargo space wrapped around the elegant alloy sheets and housing some of the most rewarding engines around. That is the Sportback; space plus performance.

Engines ensuring the latter are a 2.0TDI making 125kW (170hp) and 350Nm of torque. Following that is the 2.7TDI good for 140 kW (190hp) and 400Nm of torque, and a 3.0TDI worth 500Nm. There are also petrols like the 2.0TFSI with 155kW (211hp) and the 3.2-litre V6.

New Mercedes S-Class Coupe Returns for Latest Round of Testing

Our spy photographers have once again managed to catch Mercedes' new S-Class Coupe undergoing testing in Germany.

Unlike our previous spy photos, these new pictures provide us with our clearest glimpse of the upcoming CL replacement. Up front, the car features a redesigned bumper, an updated grille, new headlights with LED accents, and S-Class inspired horizontal slates in the air intakes. Despite all the camouflage out back, it appears the only change is a minor reshaping of the rear bumper.

Mechanically not much is expected to change, as the current CL's engine lineup will carry over virtually untouched. One notable expectation is the possibility of an S-Class Coupe 400 Hybrid which would feature a 279 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a 20 hp electric motor.

Like the recently updated 2010 S-Class, the S-Class Coupe will probably feature a major technological overhaul thanks to the addition of a SPLITVIEW monitor, a revised Night View Assist system with pedestrian detection, and an upgraded COMMAND system.

Audi has announced new details regarding their upcoming BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo competitor, the A5 Sportback.

Designed to be as "emotional and elegant as a coupe, as comfortable as a sedan, and as practical as an Avant", the A5 Sportback is essentially a five-door coupe. Although the teaser video only shows an artist stretching the A5 Sportback's design, Audi states that the new model features a large rear hatch, a graceful tapering roofline which is 36 mm (1.4") lower than the A4 Sedan's, and four frameless doors with "dynamic window styling".

In terms of practicality, Audi has informed us that the new A5 Sportback offers 480 liters (17.0 cubic feet) of cargo capacity and 980 liters (34.6 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded down.

At launch, the A5 Sportback will be offered with three diesels and two petrol engines. Diesel versions include the 2.0 TDI with 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, a 2.7 TDI with 140 kW (190 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and a 3.0-liter V6 TDI with 176 kW (240 hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) torque. On the petrol side, potential owners can select a 2.0 TFSI quattro with 155 kW (211 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque or a more powerful 3.2-liter V6 quattro with 195 kW (265 hp).

Performance options include a newly developed ESP system with an electronic differential lock for improved steering response, Audi drive select, adaptive shock absorbers, and dynamic steering with continuously variable assistance.

Look for the new A5 to start arriving in European showrooms this September with a base price of €36,050.

Porsche Cayman 998 Mule Spied Again

orsche is still reaping the rewards off its current facelifted Cayman. Nonetheless looking forward is always preferable to looking back, and so the company is now quite far into preparing the next-generation Cayman. These spy pictures reveal a mule that appears to be wider and has beefier wheel arches than the current model. What may look like the model we have on the streets is actually a disguised 998 as the car is codenamed. Just look at the imprecisely-fitting tailpipes and the fender extensions. Dead giveaways.

The current Cayman comes with the optional new PDK dual-clutch transmission which provides very smooth shifting in traffic conditions and sporty changes when pushed to respond quicker. Fuel consumption is said to be improved despite power and torque increases. The 998 Cayman will presumably use the PDK system as well.

There is no indication as to whether Porsche will stick with naturally-aspirated boxer engines for the Cayman or move with the wind and adopt turbo power for the baby 911 for the first time. The Volkswagen Group is brimming with such engines so adapting them to suit Porsche characteristics would not require too heavy an investment.

Production will begin in only a few years' time at Magna Steyr's factory in Austria. Dealers will receive their first batches of Boxster and Cayman stock in 2012.

BMW Releases X1 Teasers via Facebook

BMW, ever on the cutting edge of the marketing machete, has released some teaser pictures of the X1 on the web. Instead of these leaking out as they sometimes do, BMW themselves put them up on their FaceBook page. That says we are not too far off from seeing the first full set of official pictures.

Official camouflaged "spy" pictures of a prototype X1 are already all over the Internet after appearing a few days ago. The tiny SUV is one step down from the X3 and represents the new entry-level BMW SUV. BMW is targeting an even younger set with the X1, people who are mostly urban dwellers and probably haven't started nesting yet.

There are a few models planned for the X1 including an xDrive18i and a 177hp (130kW) xDrive20d. Higher up the model range the xDrive23d will be offered. It puts out 204hp (150kW) and 400Nm of torque. It also runs from 0 - 60mph in 7.3 seconds and realises a top velocity of 223km/h. BMW's xDrive AWD system is fitted but there's speculation that baseline models will feature RWD.

European deliveries will start in autumn which means the vehicle will appear in the metal at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Latest BMW X1 Prototype Video in Mallorca

oy is what you make of it. That's the payoff line at the end of this video clip showing the upcoming BMW X1 in what is now its familiar prototype garb. The tests were being done in Mallorca, Spain. Indications are that BMW is not pitching the X1 against tougher offroad vehicles. On the clip the tiny SUV goes through its paces by firstly negotiating a gravel track with haystacks as apex points.

Later it takes a drive up a mountain pass, still on dirt. Then we see it on twisty asphalt, probably the car's best surface. BMW always puts driving pleasure ahead of all else so that the car excels on tar is by design and not by default.

Launch models will be the xDrive20d which produces 130kW (177hp) and has an economy figure of 5.8 litres per 100km. There's also the xDrive23d worth 150kW (204hp) and two entry level models namely the xDrive18i and xDrive18d.

They say if you can't beat them, join them and that is what BMW seems to be doing. No longer able to keep the X1 away from spy lenses the company has decided to bare it all in public. Of course much of this helps hype the car up before its European introduction this summer.

2011 BMW 1-Series spied up close

We got some new spy photos featuring the 2011 BMW 1-Series. This time around, a series of shots with the hatch wide open gives us a view from a new angle.

Still mostly camouflaged, we see this five-door edging closer to its production ready model. We hope to some day get a few pictures of the rumored 1er shooting brake, if the car actually exists.

Until then, we can recap what we know about the upcoming 2011 hatchback. Power could come from either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged petrol. Horsepower will range from about 105 horsepower with the base 1.3-liter engine, a retuned unit with 136 hp, or a 326 horsepower model. If you prefer a turbo diesel engine, you will get a choice between a 150, 184, or 211 horsepower unit. The driver will reign in that power with either an automatic transmission or a six-speed manual.

The rear-wheel-drive car is also getting touched up by the Efficient Dynamics crew at the automaker. They will be doing their best to keep emissions low, while maximizing fuel economy. Although we have photos of the interior, details are pretty hard to discern. We can see a multi-function steering wheel apparently with a Bluetooth function built in.

We expect to see the debut of the 2011 BMW 1-Series within a year-and-a-half.

White BMW 5 Series GT spotted

After the official revealing, the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is out in the open and cruising down the Munich streets. While the official marketing photos were all about the gold and blueish colors, the test car spotted by Carscoop is sporting the beautiful Alpine White paint.

We never thought we would say this, but the 5 Series GT looks better on public roads that in those marketing photos. The car definitely has an impressive stance, road presence and it absolutely stands out. Of course, some of us are just not cut for this car and it will be difficult to accept it, but it definitely has its place in the BMW line-up and we are willing to bet that it will do just fine.

Now what else is new with the GT? Well, beside the fact that it has a brand new engine, the N55, a twin-scroller turbocharger which features for the first time High Precision Injection and variable VALVETRONIC.

BMW 7-Series M-sport package spotted uncovered - It's no M7

Earlier this week, we brought you the first spy photos of what was thought to be the long awaited BMW M7. Now that our spies have managed to catch the car completely uncovered, we're left thinking this prototype is nothing more than a standard BMW 7-Series outfitted with a new M-sports package.

After closer analysis, you can clearly see that this 7-Series lacks several key M styling characteristics such as quad exhaust pipes and front fender M logo gills. What about the power bulge on the hood? Previously we've seen various BMW prototypes wearing a similar hood bulge most likely making way for diagnostic equipment used in powertrain testing. All of these omissions virtually rule out the possibly of this being the highly anticipated M7.

Despite lacking the X5 M's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, with 555 horsepower (408kW) and 500 lb-ft (678Nm) of torque, the car features a dynamic appearance thanks to more aggressive bumpers and new wheels.

When (or if) BMW will unveil the M7 remains a mystery, but judging by your reaction, it can't come soon enough.

Spy video: 2011 BMW 6 Series

The 2011 BMW 6 Series was video spied by the folks at Edmunds Insideline. A 6er prototype shows up at the Nurburgring track for more testing and for the first time, judging by the engine sound, we believe we’re looking at test mule powered by the powerful 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engine.

As we learned in the past, several powerplants will be available for the new 6 Series, starting with the the twin-turbo 6-cylinder 326 horsepower engine, followed by a 6-cylinder diesel as well and as a surprise, the newly developed, but not yet released, Tri-Turbo 6-cylinder diesel which produces 354 horsepower.

And since we’re moving towards more fuel efficient luxury sport cars, BMW will offer a model under the 655 naming convention which is powered by the hybrid powertrain from the X6 and 7 Series hybrids.

BMW X1 going off-road

Media publications around the world were invited last week to test drive the not-yet released BMW X1. Gathered in the Mallorca region in Spain, auto journalists spent a day behind the wheel of the smallest Sports Activity Vehicle in the BMW line-up.

We showed you yesterday Edmunds’ report on the car and overall, it was quite positive. We have to admit that the X1 is starting to grow on us and we finally see where the car will fit. An X3 sits in our garage currently, but looking at X1 photos, we definitely see ourselves “falling” for it. We love the overall size, interior space seems to be as spacious as the X3, but with a far better design.

Sure, the next X3 is just around the corner and it is rumored to have been taken up a notch on the design scale, but at the same time, it carry a higher price tag.

To our surprise, the next generation BMW 1 Series due to launch in 2011 has already made an appearance in Munich. The test mule spotted here seems to be the 5-door hatchback version, one of the 5 different variants considered for the 1 Series family.

The first new BMW 1 Series will launch in 2011, along with the Z2 Roadster based on the same platform. The coupe and convertible models will be available a year later together with the 135i SuperSport vehicle.

Many people have wondered what the next 1 Series will bring to the table, some believe, including us, that the new 1 Series will have a revolutionary design, moving away from the safe design lines used in the current 1er.

Audi R8 Electric Vehicle Concept Rumored to Debut in Frankfurt

September's Frankfurt Motor Show is shaping up to be an Audi extravaganza, thanks to recent reports which indicate the company will unveil four vehicles at the show.

Besides debuting the redesigned A8 and the new A5 Sportback, Audi is expected to show the highly anticipated R8 Spyder and a R8 electric vehicle concept. Like the coupe, the R8 Spyder will be offered with a 4.2-liter V8 with 420 hp or a massive 5.2-liter V10 with 525 hp.

Details on R8 EV are scarce, it remains unclear if the concept will be a pure electric vehicle or a more contemporary gasoline-electric hybrid. While the chances of production are minimal, Audi probably wants to demonstrate they know alterative powertrains aren't always diesels.

Porsche RS Spyder: Street version in the works?

Sources say that Porsche is working on converting the ultra-lightweight, open cockpit LMP2 race-car to a limited-run road version that will become a two-seater. The car is almost being seen as a successor to the Carrera GT, which ended production in 2005.

What do you mean ‘almost?’ Well, instead of using the 630-hp V10 from the Carrera GT, Porsche will be using a 3.4L V8 making around 400-hp.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Production Model

We’re continuing our coverage on the new BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo with a new video that was just released by BMW. Back in March, right after the concept GT was unveiled, Hans-Jurgen Branz, Project Manager for the 5 Series GT, spoke about the idea behind this new somewhat controversial car and the expectations BMW has for it.

We hope that by now you’re familiar with the 5 Series GT model, but just in case you missed our big news yesterday and the multiple photos, you can always go back here. As a last minute update, the BMW 5 Series GT will make its debut at the Frankfurt IAA motor show in September and European sales will start in October. The pricing for the German market has also been announced, the entry model 530i GT starts at 55,200 euro, followed by the diesel version, 530d GT at 55,700 euro. The high-end model, 550i GT, comes with a premium price of 75,300 euro, approximately $104,000.

BMW North America expects the 550i GT to have a base price set between $65,000-$70,000.

Audi Confirms A5 Sportback, Q5 Hybrid, RS5 Engine & New A8 November Unveiling

Audi's Chairman of the Board, Rupert Stadler, has outlined the brand's upcoming product offensive at an annual shareholders meeting in Germany.

During his remarks, Stadler confirmed that the highly anticipated 2010 A8 will unveiled in November and that it will be "the sportiest luxury sedan in its class - and set new standards with regard to interiors."

As for the A5 Sportback, Stadler announced it will be revealed sometime this year and it will be a "genuine innovation in the B segment: a revolutionary vehicle concept offering the ideal blend of functionality and aesthetics."

Other notable announcements included a 2010 launch date for the A1 minicar, a Q3 crossover for 2011, and a possible hybrid version of the Q5.

In other Audi related news, Car magazine is reporting that a source has indicated that the upcoming 2010 RS5 will feature a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 engine with 450 bhp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Available initially only in coupe form, a convertible version is expected to join the lineup later on.

Next Gen 2012 VW Passat First Mule Spy Photos

Our spy photographers have caught Volkswagen's next generation 2012 Passat undergoing testing on Germany's famous Nürburgring.

While the mule wears the current Passat body, we can see slight modifications in the form of wider wheel wells and lengthened B-pillars. This clearly indicates that the next generation Passat will be longer and wider than today's model.

In terms of exterior design, the new Passat is expected to ditch the current model's bland styling for a more aggressive appearance which is both luxurious and dynamic.

According to CAR magazine, the redesigned Passat will feature a host of weight saving technologies such as ultra-thin glass, foam chassis reinforcements, and a low-friction 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Other technologies are likely to include an automatic parking system, "airless" Continental tires, an advanced window cleaning system that doesn't use traditional wipers, 360° parking cameras, adaptive cruise control with speed limit monitoring, and possibly even a sci-fi low-voltage magnetic paint which will allow owners to change the car's exterior color by adjusting the current.

Power will continue to be provided by a variety of engines including a 3.0-liter V6 with 280 hp, an unspecified replacement for the VR6, and possibly a new diesel engine with 300 hp and an eight-speed DSG transmission. Volkswagen is also expected to offer a hybrid version of the 3.0-liter V6.

Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing White Prototype Spied Again

While we've already seen this particular mule before, our spies have managed to take additional pictures which show a better view of the grille, headlights, and rear end. Although they were unable to get a glimpse of the interior, Mercedes already released official press photos of the SLS cockpit last month.

As previously reported, the new supercar features a naturally aspirated front mid-mounted 6.2-liter V8 engine which produces 571 hp (420 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to the combination of a powerful engine and an advanced seven-speed double clutch transmission, the SLS AMG Gullwing rockets from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph).

Expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the SLS AMG Gullwing will go on sale next year with a base price somewhere in the neighborhood of €150,000.

Rendered Speculation: 2011 BMW 6-Series

Some new artist rendering have surfaced showing what BMW's upcoming 2011 6-Series may look like.

While they're just one artist's interpretation, recent spy photos have shown the new 6-Series will feature aggressive styling that adopts several design cues from the Z4 roadster, 7-Series, and the CS concept.

Engine options will likely carry over from the current 6-Series, but the 360 hp 4.8-liter V8 will be replaced by the new 400 hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 from the new 7-Series. The M6 is also expected to drop its V10 engine with 500 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque for a slightly retuned version of the X5 M and X6 M's new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque.

New Porsche 911 (997) GT3 RS Facelift Spy Video

ach year from about this time of year the Nurburgring is abuzz with activity from automakers wanting to hone their upcoming cars on the famous track. Porsche of course is one of the main culprits. This spy video from UK CAR shows the new facelifted Porsche 911 GT3 RS going through its usual paces through the track. The sound alone makes for exceptional viewing so you can even "watch" the video clip without the picture.

The new GT3 RS has GT3 blood running through it but is a bit different. It will have a massive rear spoiler which seems to have been built of carbon fiber. Deeper side skirts and wider rear bodywork give the GT3 RS a squat fit for a very sharp track tool.

The car will lose a few kilograms and gain more speed. The GT3 facelift already kicks out a suitable 435hp (320kW) from its 3.8-litre flat six engine. In its best form the RS should be able to go from 0 - 100km/h in about 3.8 seconds.

Among all the other hot cars expected to make their debuts at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show in September will be the GT3 RS facelift. It seems like a long while to wait but when it comes to all things Porsche time just seems to fly.

Possible 2012 Audi A3 Image Leaked?

What you see here may or may not be part of the rear end of the next-generation Audi A3. The image is quite blurred so details are sketchy at best. What can be seen distinctly though are the four Audi rings, some Q5-like design cues and LEDs on the tail lamp. Of course the A3 wording on the registration plate tells us what car it is.

The next A3 should hit European showroom floors in 2010 since the current model has been in the market for six years now. Body styles will include a three-door hatch, a five-door Sportback, a cabriolet and a rumoured sedan for the US market which will be sold as a 2012 model.

The engines speculated to be in the lineup include the recently announced 1.2 TSI making 75kW (105hp), the 1.4 TSI producing 104kW (141hp) as well as a 1.8 TSI with 127kW (173hp). There will also be turbo diesels just as in the current model which will be topped by a rumoured 152kW (207hp) 2.0-litre TDI.

Sitting atop the pile for the first time will be an RS 3 model which has been spied during testing exercises. That car should run the same 250kW (340hp) 2.5-litre turbo found in the new TT RS. Mated with all these engines will be choice between a 6-speed manual or a new 7-speed DSG double-clutch transmission.

Spy Photos: 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid

The upcoming 2010 BMW X6 Hybrid has been spotted again near Spartanburg by our close friend Palbay.We have recently saw the X6 ActiveHybrid at the Detroit Auto Show where we learned that it will go on sale by the end of this year.

Compared to the previous spy photos that showed us the X6 in darker colors, this time, we seem to have here the official single color that will be available for the X6 Hybrid. We mentioned in our previous article that the Hybrid SAC will be available in one color only, similar to the one we have seen at previous auto shows, a light blue paint.

The BMW X6 is a two-mode hybrid based on an 8-cylinder gasoline engine which has been custom-made to meet the requirements of an SAV. The system uses a modular hybrid system which can be adapted to many different engine/vehicle combination, as opposed to a design-specific petrol engine/hybrid combination, which sees wider use in the automotive industry.

Porsche Panamera: Convertible coming?

Rumors about a coupe version of the Porsche Panamera were circulating before the sedan was even officially announced, and while a 928 successor has potential, a convertible version of the four-door Panamera seems downright absurd. However, according to an interview conducted by Auto Motor und Sport with Porsche development head Wolfgang Dürheimer, a drop-top Panamera is feasible – if not entirely likely. Dürheimer is quoted as saying (translated), "Currently, this topic is not on the agenda. We have other homework to do, such as the six-cylinder. And then the Panamera will also have a hybrid engine." As expected, AMuS runs with it, saying that the Panamera convertible would pack a cloth soft-top rather than a retractable hard-top, in keeping with Porsche's convertible 911 variants and Boxster.
